What is Mariachi Matters?

Mariachi Matters is an after school music education program for youth that teaches basic music fundamentals and Mariachi ensemble performance. It first begun in September of 2011, with the help of Mariachi veteran, Romeoville resident and current artistic director, Juan Cervantes, whose goal and dream was to see the heritage of Mariachi passed on to the children and youth of his community. The program aims to positively influence children/youth through the arts, steering them away from negative influences in the community, such as gangs & drugs, and to engage parents in the process. We are very thankful to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Community Foundation of Will County for their generous grants that help us keep this program free.

Who benefits from Mariachi Matters?

Mariachi Matters is a uniquely designed opportunity for immigrant youth in the suburban community to explore and embrace their cultural heritage though music, and for their families to engage in leadership. Any youth, however, between the ages of 7-12 residing within the 365U Valley View school district, interested in learning Mariachi can enroll in the one-year program, regardless of their cultural/ethnic background.

How can I support Mariachi Matters?

Mariachi Matters is a COMP10958924_659695507485605_1881900106493023360_nLETELY free program! But, in order to cover all the expenses involved with a growing program, like costs of musical supplies, space, and transportation, Mariachi Matters partners with friends in the community, such as White Oak Library and New Life Lutheran Church. However, your individual donation can make a difference in the life of a youth that can’t afford to buy a violin, trumpet or guitar. Or, it can provide for teaching development and materials, and musical opportunities for the students throughout the year. Make your tax-deductible contribution today!

Program Pillars: Positive Values, a Positive Identity, and a Commitment to Lifelong Learning!
